The Indiana Hurdy Gurdy Workshop

12th Annual Indiana

Hurdy Gurdy Workshop

September 4-8, 2024

The 12th Annual Indiana Hurdy-Gurdy Workshop is happening again this year at the beautiful Waycross Camp and Conference Center in scenic Brown County, Indiana! Learning and playing for both amateurs and professionals will take place alongside other enthusiasts in a relaxed atmosphere with renowned teachers and performers. This is an intensive workshop aimed at improving preexisting skills, and providing the knowledge you will need to successfully regulate and play your hurdy gurdy now and into the future. Again, we are proud to partner with the nonprofit Bloomington Early Music to bring you the workshop.

Hear what some of our past students have to say...

"I attended the HG workshop in IN in 2021 and 2022. The teachers were amazing players. They were patient with us all, regardless of experience. We laughed a lot, played a lot, and danced the nights away. We even had a gurdy buffet one evening, exchanging and playing each other’s gurdies. Overall, a totally joyful crankin’ experience. See you in September!" - Jackie Goff, KY USA

"Participating in the Indiana hurdy gurdy workshop in 2021 and 2022 shaped my playing immensely as a player and provided me with memories to last a lifetime! First of all, the hurdy-gurdy is a relatively obscure instrument with few experts scattered around the U.S. To be able to have hands-on, close instruction with some of the best teachers in the country is a rare treat. Scott Gayman is also a hurdy-gurdy repair and maintenance mastermind and is able to check out students' instruments to fix small issues, provide tips on ongoing maintenance, and general repair. This consultation time with Scott I've since learned is quite invaluable and worth the price of admission alone! The workshop was both incredibly informative to me in 2021 as a true beginner and also in 2022 as more of an intermediate player, as the instruction provided core technique and best practices for me to take home and run with. The teachers also do a great job of meeting students where they are to best meet their needs along their respective musical journeys. In other words, an individual with no musical background will get a ton out of this workshop, as will an advanced hurdy-gurdyist who would like to hone their technique in more of a master class style format. You will definitely get your money's worth, as the schedule starts early in the morning and often ends with a jam and dance late into the evening, with all sorts of maintenance, coup technique, cottoning, tune practice, etc. layered within. I also truly enjoyed meeting other workshop students and peers and have continued to stay in touch with many of them and consider them hurdy-gurdy friends for life! This workshop is truly special and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn more about the wonderful world of hurdy-gurdy!" - Alexa, TN USA
